Raising $$$ In The Keystone State; Galko, Santorum, & Rudy

The Pennsyltucky Politics blog directed my attention to Josh Drobnyk’s coverage of the 2008 presidential race for the Morning Call.  Lemme say this:  The Morning Call is on this beat with new media mojo that the little ole’ Inky cannot match.  Kudos to them.

Among his flurry of posts last Friday are two of acute interest to readers here.  First, please note the Giuliani campaign’s new political director for the Northeast region– which does not cover PA, btw, which as of two weeks ago was part of the mid-Atlantic region covered by Mike Roman– is Vince Galko.  Vince was fireballin’ Rick’s campaign manager.  Seems like a nice get, but given Rick’s most recent campaign perhaps its best he’s not covering the Keystone state!

Most interestingly, though, is a nice piece he had covering the traffic southeastern PA will be enjoying the next couple of weeks from pretty much all the presidential candidates.  Read the whole magilla here.  Short version:

Hizzoner has one of Arlen Specter’s former Chiefs of Staff making money calls for him, a fellow named David Urban.  Given the recent get of Santorum’s former campaign manager, we have dogs and cats playing together!  Rudy also will be having a private event in a few days at a private home on the Main Line organized by Manuel Stamatakis, one of former Governor Tom Ridge’s major rainmakers.

I have wondered how Romney ever became a first tier candidate.  Well, in PA it may have something to do with the fact that Charlie Kopp, former Tom Ridge finance chair and arguably the biggest moneymaker in the state GOP, is backing him.

The rest of Ridge’s DC insiders seem to be keeping it real by backing McCain.

Obama just came through and raised about a quarter mil.

Rendell, paragon of forthrightness and stern leadership he is, prefers to avoid publicly picking a horse in the Dem primary, but his peeps seem to mostly be wagering on Hillary.

Shockingly, Edwards’ event is being organized by three lawyers representing three different law firms.

Great work, Josh, and thanks for piercing the financial veil of our political process.  As Tom Leonard, one of Hillary’s shekel finders put it in Josh’s story, “[T]he real first primary is not Iowa or New Hampshire, but how you do in your first-quarter fundraising…”

Let’s hope Rudy shows well in that poll.  We’ll know in about three weeks.

UPDATE:  Just heard as of April 1 Vince Galko will be covering PA as part of his duties as political director of the northeast for Team Giuliani, and Mike Roman will be kicked upstairs to work out of the NYC office.  I know Mike has been moving around like a migrant worker following the seasons, so I wish him and his family the best.  Get in touch with me when you get a chance, Vince, and sorry for the joke above about that Santorum ’06 reelection bid!  You were, indeed, swimming against an awfully strong current…
